Lucknow, February 2: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the crucial role of high-quality, certified seeds in boosting agricultural production. He called for a new and modern seed policy tailored to address the current agricultural challenges, focusing on increasing productivity per hectare rather than merely expanding cultivated area.
The Chief Minister directed that the seed policy prioritize the development of high-yielding, disease-resistant, and climate-resilient seed varieties. He stressed the need for a concrete roadmap to enhance the state’s seed production capacity, quality, and availability over the next five years.
Yogi Adityanath also highlighted the importance of using modern technology throughout the seed production, processing, and storage processes to ensure there is no shortage of certified seeds. He mandated end-to-end traceability for all seeds supplied to farmers, warning against any tolerance for adulterated or substandard seeds. Every seed packet reaching farmers must be certified, tested, and fully compliant with standards.
The Chief Minister urged collaboration among agricultural universities, ICAR institutions, public sector bodies, and the private seed industry to accelerate seed research, innovation, and the variety release process. To promote crop diversification, he called for a special strategy ensuring the availability of high-quality seeds for pulses, oilseeds, maize, millet, sorghum, and horticultural crops.
In line with this, Yogi Adityanath instructed a swift push to establish at least five seed parks within the next five years. These integrated complexes will be equipped with facilities for production, processing, quality testing, and storage of seeds.
He also directed that all agricultural science centers in the state be directly linked with seed development programs to strengthen coordination between research, training, and field-level technology dissemination. Each of the state’s nine climatic zones should have a dedicated center of excellence to develop high-quality seeds and technical solutions specific to local crop requirements. Progressive farmers should be involved in seed development programs to blend local experience with modern techniques.
Further, the Chief Minister called for increased energy efficiency in agriculture by promoting solar-powered tubewells to reduce irrigation costs and encourage clean energy use. He prioritized supporting local solar panel manufacturing units in the state, highlighting their role in generating employment, attracting investment, and strengthening agricultural infrastructure.
