Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inspected two temporary night shelters at Bargadwa and Raptinagar in Gorakhpur on Wednesday to review arrangements amid the ongoing severe cold wave. During the visit, he distributed blankets and meals to the residents and other needy individuals staying at these shelters.
After the inspection, the Chief Minister directed district administrations and urban local bodies across the state to ensure that no person sleeps on footpaths or railway tracks during the cold wave. He emphasised providing dignified accommodation with proper facilities in night shelters. The government has allocated sufficient funds to all districts to protect citizens from the harsh cold conditions.
During his Gorakhpur visit, CM Yogi interacted with people residing in the night shelters, inquiring about their well-being and the services provided. The residents expressed satisfaction with the facilities and thanked the Chief Minister for ensuring their comfort during the cold spell. The CM assured them that the government is fully committed to their welfare and convenience.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Yogi Adityanath highlighted the severity of the current cold wave and said that the state government has instructed all district administrations to take action on a war footing. This includes operating night shelters at a large scale, distributing woollen blankets and warm clothing to the needy, and lighting sufficient bonfires in public places.
He informed that Gorakhpur city currently runs 19 night shelters, providing temporary accommodation for around one thousand people who otherwise risk sleeping on footpaths or railway tracks. All shelters are secure and well-managed. Similar large-scale night shelters are being operated in all major cities and districts of Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Minister further urged district and local administrations to ensure that homeless individuals are brought to night shelters and not allowed to spend nights outdoors. He also appealed to voluntary organisations and charitable institutions to actively participate in aiding people during the cold wave by distributing blankets and woollen clothes, calling it a noble and charitable act.
Reinforcing his commitment to public service, CM Yogi visited Gorakhpur for the third time within a month on Wednesday. Prior to this, he had inspected night shelters and distributed blankets on December 28 and December 10 at various locations including Tipinagar, Dharmshala Bazaar, near the railway station, and behind Jhulelal Mandir.
