Farmers Protest Against Drug Abuse in Amritsar, Call for Punjab Shutdown

Farmers in Amritsar staged a protest against drug abuse and government policies, calling for a statewide shutdown in Punjab.

Amritsar, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : Farmers gathered in large numbers on Thursday near the Golden Gate in Amritsar to protest against the Punjab government’s policies and the rising influence of drug abuse in the state. The demonstration was organized by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) along with other groups, who called for a statewide shutdown, referred to as “Punjab Bandh.”

Under the leadership of farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, dozens of farmers and supporters rallied against the government. Pandher stated that after burning effigies, the protesters would march together to amplify their message.

He emphasized that the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) unions are urging the public to support the shutdown, which aims to raise awareness against the drug mafia and substance abuse in Punjab. Pandher noted that the call for the bandh has received significant backing across the state and at district headquarters.

Expressing gratitude to the people of Punjab, he remarked that citizens voluntarily closed shops and businesses, contributing to the movement’s success. To address potential disruptions to the public, Pandher assured that ambulance and emergency services would remain operational during the protest. He urged participants and the public to maintain peace and order, warning against any antisocial elements attempting to disrupt the demonstration.

Pandher concluded by stating that the protests will continue until the government takes decisive action against the drug trade and addresses the farmers’ demands.
