Clean Ganga Mission Boosts Sewage Treatment Capacity by 538.03 MLD by 2025-26

New Delhi, April 22: The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has announced an increase in sewage treatment capacity along the Ganga and its tributaries by a total of 538.03 million liters per day (MLD) during the 2025-26 period. This information was disclosed in a statement from the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

According to the statement, this capacity enhancement is achieved through 18 projects across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bihar. A total of 28 sewage treatment plants (STPs) have been completed, compared to just 22 STPs completed in the previous year.

An investment of approximately ₹4,700 crores has been made in these projects, which will strengthen sewage treatment infrastructure in the Ganga basin and help reduce pollution levels.

The ministry stated that these achievements are the result of sustained efforts to mitigate major pollution sources across various states and to complete significant projects on time.

Uttar Pradesh has been a key contributor to this achievement, with several projects implemented in Moradabad, Shuklaganj, Varanasi, Vrindavan, Prayagraj, and Agra.

Notably, the highest capacity addition of 55 MLD occurred in the Assi-BHU area of Varanasi. In Prayagraj, the interception and diversion of 13 drains, along with the upgrade of the Salori STP, has developed an additional capacity of 43 MLD, with an approved cost of ₹331.75 crores.

In Moradabad, pollution control efforts on the Ramganga River have led to a capacity increase of 25 MLD, while Shuklaganj in Kanpur has added 5 MLD of capacity.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the NMCG has also developed the ‘Ganga Pulse Public Portal’ for monitoring sewage treatment plants. This portal provides real-time data and oversees STPs in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
