(Kiran News) – On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a strong message from the Red Fort, firmly declaring that India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers. Amid repeated US threats over tariffs and a stalemate on the trade deal, Prime Minister Modi delivered a clear message to US President Donald Trump—without naming him—by stating that farmers, livestock keepers, and fishermen are the country’s top priority and that he himself will stand like a wall against any harmful policies. India will never compromise on farmers’ welfare.

This statement comes as trade deal discussions between India and the United States remain deadlocked. Under the proposed deal, the US has been pressuring India to open its markets for American dairy and agricultural products. However, the Prime Minister made it clear that India will not allow any harm to its domestic agriculture and dairy sectors. Last week, he also stated that he is prepared to pay a personal price to protect farmers’ interests.

Reiterating the importance of a self-reliant India, Prime Minister Modi said that the country must become self-sufficient to safeguard its interests, as depending on others for needs can lead to crises. The government has identified around 100 districts where farmers need extra support, and the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana has been launched for this purpose. He highlighted that ensuring food for all after independence was a major challenge, but Indian farmers have made the nation self-reliant through their hard work. He emphasised that to protect our interests, self-reliance is essential, and that India will never compromise on farmers’ welfare.

President Trump has continuously pressured India to open its agriculture and dairy sectors to American products, but the central government has made it clear that the domestic market will not be opened for these. This firm stand by the Indian government has prevented the finalisation of a trade deal between the two countries.

To push its terms in the trade deal, Trump has imposed tariffs on India, including a 25 percent tariff, and has also announced an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian oil purchases from Russia. Despite the mounting tariff pressure, Prime Minister Modi reiterated today that he will protect farmers’ interests and will not bow to US pressure on this matter.
