China May Restrict Access to VPNs and Foreign Websites: Report

Beijing, April 20: A recent report indicates that Chinese citizens may lose access to several foreign online platforms. These sites provide uncensored news, educational resources, and entertainment. President Xi Jinping is actively promoting efforts to eliminate such access.

According to Bitter Winter, China Digital Times has shared internal notices raising concerns that the methods currently used by individuals to access uncensored internet may soon be entirely blocked.

So far, people have been using VPNs and specialized devices known as ‘Airports’ to connect to the open internet. However, a telecom partner has instructed a regional content delivery company to terminate all international connections for its business clients. Furthermore, all traffic leaving China from any IP address under their control must be blocked.

The notice also states that customers must remove any traces of VPNs, proxies, or tools that help bypass restrictions from their systems.

Failure to comply with these directives will result in immediate disconnection, potential data loss, and no refunds.

Another document reveals that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology convened a meeting with major telecom companies to discuss tightening regulations on data connections leaving the country without permission. Special attention was given to ‘dedicated lines’ that can transmit information abroad without government approval.

Legal experts note that the rules surrounding VPNs in China are somewhat ambiguous, and until now, ordinary citizens have only faced occasional fines.

The report suggests that it remains unclear whether the new draft of the Cyber Crime Law will criminalize these actions entirely. However, recent government and corporate notices indicate that enforcement is likely to intensify even without new legislation.

If these new regulations are fully implemented, the ‘Great Firewall’ will become even more robust, transforming China’s internet into a more isolated environment. As often happens, the initial impact will be felt most by ordinary citizens who wish to access more than just the content presented by the government.
