
Bengaluru, April 20: A significant technological achievement has been recorded in India’s supply chain sector. A new technique for delivering goods via drones has been tested in the country. This initiative involved a major international courier company collaborating with a leading technical institute from Madras.
The primary goal of this trial was to assess how quickly and safely drones can deliver goods in crowded urban environments. According to IIT, while traditional package deliveries typically take an hour or more, drones completed the task in just a few minutes. The central government announced this information on Monday, stating that the tests were conducted in Bengaluru.
During the trial, the drone flew along a designated route, successfully delivering packages from one location to another. Notably, the drone avoided issues such as traffic, signals, and road congestion by flying directly. IIT Madras emphasized that the main aim of this initiative is to make the entire supply chain process faster, cheaper, and more reliable in the future.
This technology could prove particularly useful for delivering life-saving medications, essential supplies, and emergency deliveries. Experts believe that if such drone services are implemented on a large scale, the delivery landscape in cities could change dramatically. This would save time, reduce costs, and enable faster services for the public. Currently, this trial is considered a significant step towards urban drone delivery in the country.
Looking ahead, there are expectations for broader applications of this technology. One of the objectives of this initiative was to evaluate the feasibility of high-speed drone operations in complex urban areas. The drone tests were conducted between Electronic City Phase 2 in Bengaluru and a location near Bengaluru International Airport.
This trial focused on medium-distance logistics services, assessing the capability of delivering goods from one key point to another within the city. It was conducted under a specialized research framework, evaluating the safe and efficient flight of drones in urban airspace. According to IIT, covering a distance of approximately 53 kilometers by road typically takes over 60 minutes. However, using drones, this distance was reduced to about 39 to 42 kilometers via air.
The one-way trip during the trial was completed in approximately 21 minutes. This clearly indicates that this technology could be highly effective for time-sensitive deliveries and has significant potential for improvement. Notably, the drone operated in sensitive airport areas classified as yellow and red zones. All necessary permissions were obtained from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for this operation. The drone flew at an altitude of 120 meters, in accordance with established guidelines. This entire trial was conducted under a specialized research center.
In addition to this initiative, work is also being done in areas such as air freight transport, electric vehicle integration, and advanced demand forecasting. This project demonstrates how academic institutions, industries, and policymakers can collaborate to create a more efficient and sustainable future supply chain.
