Premier Li Qiang inaugurates the 140th Canton Fair in Guangzhou, emphasizing Chinas commitment to open markets and international cooperation.

Guangzhou, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Chinese Premier Li Qiang inaugurated the 140th China Import and Export Fair, commonly known as the Canton Fair, on Tuesday afternoon in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. During the opening ceremony, he highlighted that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the fair. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter, praising the fair’s achievements and reaffirming China’s commitment to expanding high-level openness.
Li noted that the Canton Fair has showcased the immense vitality of China’s economy and society, reflecting the continuous efforts and progress of millions of Chinese people. He emphasized the growing and deepening relationship between China and the world, stating that a more open and innovative China brings new opportunities and injects certainty into the global market.
The Premier described the fair as a vibrant platform that meets the challenges of changing international circumstances. He shared three key insights: first, market connections should not be seen merely as bargaining tools but as effective means to promote incremental growth. China is committed to integrating its domestic and international markets and fostering a shared development approach. Second, international trade is not just about statistics; it is a voluntary choice that enhances prosperity. As a ‘super seller’ and ‘super buyer,’ China aims to create greater benefits for all parties involved. Third, partnerships based on mutual benefit and win-win outcomes are not one-sided agreements but rather empowering and successful collaborations. China will remain a reliable friend to developing nations.
Li Qiang reiterated China’s dedication to promoting high-quality development and expanding its openness. He outlined plans to share more market opportunities, implement strategies to boost domestic demand, and further reduce market access barriers. Additionally, he expressed intentions to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation, align with the development strategies of other countries, and support capable Chinese enterprises in investing abroad.
In a video address, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala remarked that the Canton Fair serves as a significant platform connecting China with the world. She expressed hope that all parties would work together to promote WTO reforms and build an open, rules-based global trading system.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by over 700 representatives from nearly 90 countries and regions. This year’s fair features more than 30,000 exhibitors and approximately 340,000 foreign buyers.
