New Delhi, May 23: The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, visited Uttarkashi district on Saturday to review polling booths and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) activities. This visit is significant for understanding the electoral arrangements in remote and sensitive areas near the India-China border and for evaluating the ongoing SIR campaign.
During his visit, the Chief Election Commissioner conducted an on-site inspection of the polling booth established in the border village of Harshil. He engaged in detailed discussions with the Booth Level Officer (BLO) and gathered information regarding the mapping of the SIR. Gyanesh Kumar praised BLO Mintu Devi for her outstanding work and the comprehensive information provided about the SIR. Following this, he headed towards Gangotri Dham, where he will perform special prayers and hold a review meeting with officials regarding the SIR.
Earlier, upon arriving at the Jhala helipad in the border area, Uttarakhand’s Chief Electoral Officer, Dr. B.V.R.C. Purushottam, along with ADM Mukta Mishra and other administrative officials, welcomed him with a plant gift. Subsequently, Gyanesh Kumar traveled with officials to the Harshil area near the India-China border. This visit is seen as a crucial step in strengthening democratic processes in border regions. The Election Commission’s active involvement in these remote areas has also sparked enthusiasm among local residents.
Harshil is a picturesque and serene mountain village located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River in Uttarkashi district. Known for its apple orchards, cedar forests, and snow-capped mountains, it is often referred to as “Mini Switzerland.” The village is situated on the route to Gangotri Dham and serves as an important stop during the Char Dham pilgrimage. During winter, when heavy snowfall occurs in Gangotri, the idol of Mother Ganga is brought to Mukhwa village near Harshil for worship.
