Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Addresses IRS-RBS Trainees at IIDEM, Emphasizes Innovation in Public Services

New Delhi, March 13: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar addressed trainee officers from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and the Royal Bhutan Service (RBS) at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIDEM).

The details of the CEC’s address were shared on the official ‘X’ account of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday. In his speech, the CEC highlighted the importance of innovation in public services. He stated that adopting innovative approaches is essential to strengthen the democratic process and electoral system.

IIDEM, one of the largest electoral training institutions globally, provides training on election management, voter awareness, and democratic values to officials from various countries. This session included officers from the 78th batch of IRS (Income Tax) and trainees from the Bhutan Service.

Gyanesh Kumar, a former IAS officer of the 1988 batch from the Kerala cadre, became India’s 26th Chief Election Commissioner in February 2025. He is the first CEC appointed under the new law. His tenure includes overseeing the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, various state assembly elections, and the upcoming 2026 assembly elections in states like West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

He has played a crucial role in launching ECI’s digital platforms, such as ECI-Net, and in enhancing international cooperation. In December 2025, he was also elected as the chair of the International IDEA for 2026, providing an opportunity to share India’s electoral expertise globally.

In his address, the CEC emphasized making the electoral process transparent, inclusive, and technology-driven. He inspired the trainees, stating that innovation in public service is vital for strengthening democracy. Through IIDEM, the ECI trains not only Indian officials but also foreign representatives, contributing to the improvement of global electoral standards.
