Chennai, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Chennai’s traffic police have launched a significant crackdown on dangerous motorcycle stunts, seizing 2,000 two-wheelers over a three-day operation. This initiative comes in response to the suspicious death of a college student during a motorcycle race.
On October 3, reports indicated that over 20 young riders participated in a street race around midnight on several major roads in the city, including Nungambakkam, Gemini, Kodambakkam, and the IIT flyover. The police are currently investigating the death of 21-year-old student Kukkan, who fell from his motorcycle while racing at the IIT flyover. Investigators are trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including who was riding the motorcycle at the time.
Witnesses reported that those on the motorcycle that crashed fled the scene, prompting police to identify them and ascertain who else was present during the incident. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and viral videos from social media to gather more information about the participants in the late-night race.
Reports suggest that riders were making excessive noise while performing stunts. More than 20 youths were also spotted gathering near the Valluvar Kottam traffic signal, engaging in similar reckless behavior.
In a post on social media platform X, the Chennai traffic police highlighted the extensive vehicle checks conducted across the city, which led to the seizures. The operation specifically targeted motorcycles used for dangerous stunts and those operating without registration plates.
Police emphasized their commitment to ensuring road safety and curbing reckless driving. They described the seizure of these vehicles as a crucial effort to prevent hazardous activities on public roads. While the exact locations of the seized motorcycles were not disclosed, the police reiterated their focus on enforcing regulations and continuing the investigation into the fatal incident.
