Suspect in Nimisha Thakuria Death Injured in Police Encounter

Guwahati, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : A suspect in the death of Guwahati University student Nimisha Thakuria was shot in the knee during a police operation early Tuesday in Dharapur. The suspect, Ashik Ali, allegedly attempted to flee police custody.

Following the incident, Ali was rushed to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. This event coincided with the conclusion of his eight-day police custody, as investigators were preparing to present him in court.

According to police reports, the shooting occurred when Ali tried to escape during the operation. He is accused in the case surrounding the death of 21-year-old Thakuria, a sociology student at Guwahati University, whose body was discovered at the Rudraj Kitchen Homestay on September 25.

Upon learning of the incident, police arrived at the homestay to investigate the circumstances leading to Thakuria’s death. Deputy Commissioner of Police Bolin Deori stated that Ali had claimed Thakuria died by suicide. However, police have not independently confirmed this assertion and are examining all aspects of the case.

Deori emphasized that the investigation would not take any claims at face value, stating, “We will thoroughly investigate every angle.”

Ali admitted to having a relationship with Thakuria, and investigators are looking into the nature of their relationship, the circumstances of their meeting at the homestay, and events leading up to her being found unconscious.

Authorities are also probing the injuries discovered during the investigation into Thakuria’s death, awaiting forensic and post-mortem reports to clarify the circumstances surrounding her demise. Following the discovery of her body, the case has drawn significant public attention, raising questions about whether it was a suicide or if foul play was involved. Ali’s injury and subsequent treatment at GMCH mean that he is expected to continue being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
