Chennai, August 11: The Greater Chennai Police has initiated a dedicated ‘Anti-Corruption Special Cell’ aimed at addressing public complaints against police officers accused of soliciting bribes for government services. This initiative seeks to enhance transparency within the police force and strengthen public trust.
During the announcement on Tuesday, Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj stated that this special cell will serve as a platform for citizens to report cases of corruption involving police personnel.
Individuals facing demands for bribes from police officers can contact the Anti-Corruption Special Cell at 78717-23000. Complaints can be lodged either by calling this number or by sending information via WhatsApp. The police assured that the identities and details of complainants will be kept strictly confidential, allowing people to report corruption without fear.
According to the Commissioner, the majority of police officers, from constables to senior officials, perform their duties with integrity and do not seek illegal payments or benefits. However, the misconduct of a few can tarnish the reputation of the entire force and diminish public trust in law enforcement.
Thus, this new cell has been established to identify such cases and ensure prompt action upon receiving credible complaints.
The Greater Chennai Police emphasized that every piece of information or complaint received through the special cell will be thoroughly investigated. If allegations of bribery are substantiated during the investigation, appropriate and immediate action will be taken against the involved officers.
This initiative also aims to encourage citizens to come forward with information rather than succumbing to illegal payment demands when visiting police stations or interacting with officers. Amalraj urged the public not to offer money or any other inducements for services that they are already entitled to receive.
He reiterated that policing is fundamentally a public service, and citizens should not pay anything beyond the officially stipulated fees for their legitimate needs. The Commissioner highlighted that the success of this initiative relies heavily on public cooperation and urged citizens to report any demands for bribes immediately.
The police hope that this specialized system will help curb corruption, ensure swift action on complaints, and strengthen accountability within the Greater Chennai Police.
