Bengaluru, August 5: A tragic incident occurred in the Kadechur industrial area of Karnataka, where a chemical leak from a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit resulted in the deaths of three workers and left two others critically injured.
The deceased have been identified as Vikram Singh (30), Sanjay Singh (29), and Ganesh (25). The injured, Shivkumar and Hemant, were rushed to the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for treatment, where their condition is reported to be serious.
The incident took place late Tuesday night at the pharmaceutical company located in the Kadechur industrial sector.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the chemical leak inside the factory caused harm to the workers. Authorities suspect that the toxic substance entered the victims’ bodies through inhalation, leading to fatal consequences. The exact cause of the leak and the nature of the chemical involved are still under investigation.
Upon receiving news of the incident, personnel from the Saidapura police station arrived at the scene and have initiated an inquiry. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, while officials are investigating whether negligence or violations of industrial safety standards contributed to this tragedy.
Further investigations are ongoing, and more information is awaited.
Earlier this year, on February 15, a similar incident occurred near Karekattte village in Mandya district, where an explosion and leak happened while dismantling machinery using a gas cutter at Kirti Chemicals Industries. This incident resulted in the deaths of two migrant workers from Bihar and left four others severely injured. Subsequent investigations revealed that the leak was caused during the transfer of the factory’s machinery.
Police reported that this factory had been under surveillance for some time. In 2022, a toxic gas leak had damaged crops in nearby villages and adversely affected residents’ health, raising safety concerns among the local population.
Following that incident, local farmers protested, and after intervention from local legislators and district administration, the owners decided to shut down the factory. Operations had been halted since then. The process of transferring materials to another location began on February 15, during which the chemical tank was being emptied when the explosion occurred, resulting in injuries and fatalities.
