New Delhi, April 18: A central government team is set to begin an investigation into the tragic accident at the Vedanta Power Plant located in the Dabhra tehsil of Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district. The incident resulted in multiple fatalities and left several others severely injured. This team will include officials from the Industrial Safety Department and the Boiler Inspection Department.
According to a report by NDTV, the team will arrive in Sakti from Delhi on Saturday to conduct the investigation. This action follows a report from the state’s boiler inspector, which prompted the decision for a central-level inquiry.
In addition, the Chhattisgarh government has ordered a separate investigation into the incident. The Commissioner of the Bilaspur division has been appointed as the investigating officer.
The accident occurred on April 14 in Boiler Unit-1 of the plant. Initial reports indicate that a technical failure in the joint of the water supply pipe connected to the steam pipeline led to an explosion. So far, 20 workers have lost their lives, and 15 others are critically injured, receiving treatment in various hospitals.
Given the severity of the incident, the state government has directed the investigation to determine when and how the accident occurred, the underlying causes, and what measures can be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
The investigating officer is required to submit a report to the government within 30 days.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as extremely tragic and painful. He paid tribute to the deceased and extended condolences to their families. He also instructed officials to conduct a fair and swift investigation and take strict action against those responsible.
An initial technical report from the chief boiler inspector indicated that excessive fuel accumulation inside the furnace increased pressure, damaging the pipeline and causing the explosion. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Sakti has confirmed this conclusion, identifying fuel overload as the primary cause of the accident.
