Mumbai, April 14: Harshvardhan Sapkal, the president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, expressed deep concern on Tuesday regarding the deaths of two MBA students. Reports indicate that the students died from a drug overdose after attending a music event on the night of April 11.
Sapkal claimed that the illegal drug trade is thriving under the alleged protection of the government. He accused the BJP-led government of pushing Maharashtra’s youth into the clutches of addiction.
He stated that alcohol and drugs were openly consumed at a live music concert held at the Nesco Complex in Goregaon.
Sapkal criticized the police and government authorities for their inaction until the tragic deaths occurred, asserting that only superficial measures have been taken since then.
He questioned, “How did the police fail to detect a drug party with 4,000-5,000 youths in one part of Mumbai?”
According to him, such drug and alcohol parties are happening right under the noses of the Mumbai police and government agencies, highlighting a significant failure of the home department and the entire system.
The Congress leader blamed the BJP-led government for recklessly pushing Maharashtra’s cultured youth into addiction.
He pointed out that when a drug manufacturing unit was uncovered at a farmhouse owned by a relative of a deputy chief minister, the matter was merely brushed aside with superficial actions.
Sapkal deemed it extremely serious that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis allegedly granted clean chits in such cases.
He asked, “The incidents in Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Solapur have already exposed the open drug trade in the state, yet the government remains unresponsive. Whether it’s the drug mafia Lalit Patil, the Nashik drug case, or the drug factory in Satara, Maharashtra has seen these cases allegedly reach influential individuals within the government. How many more deaths must the Fadnavis government wait for before taking action instead of handing out clean chits?”
