Celebrated Kuchipudi Dancer Shobha Naidu Remembered for Her Artistic Legacy

Mumbai, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : Shobha Naidu, a prominent figure in the world of Kuchipudi dance, is being remembered for her significant contributions to the art form as her death anniversary approaches. Known for her portrayal of the character ‘Satyabhama,’ Naidu inspired countless individuals to embrace dance as a profession.

Born in 1956 in Anakapalle, Andhra Pradesh, Naidu faced initial resistance from her father, K.V. Naidu, who wished for her to pursue a career in medicine. However, her mother, Sarojini Devi, supported her passion for the arts.

From a young age, Shobha showed a deep interest in the classical dance form of Kuchipudi. She began her training under P.L. Reddy in Rajahmundry and later honed her skills with the esteemed Kuchipudi master, Vempati Chinna Satyam, in Chennai. She also graduated from Queen Mary’s College in Chennai.

As a disciple of the revered Vempati Chinna Satyam, Shobha Naidu became one of the leading artists in Kuchipudi. She was particularly famous for her role in cultural dance-dramas as Satyabhama and served as the principal of the Srinivasa Kuchipudi Art Academy in Hyderabad. Throughout her career, she trained thousands of students and choreographed numerous dance productions.

In recognition of her vital contributions to classical dance, Naidu was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2001, following the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1991. She also received various accolades from the Andhra Pradesh government.

On a personal note, Shobha Naidu was married to Arjun Rao, a retired IAS officer, and they had a daughter named Sai Shivaranjani. She passed away at the age of 64 on October 4, 2020, in Hyderabad. Her legacy in Kuchipudi dance will continue to be celebrated both nationally and internationally.
