Kolkata, August 4: A four-member special team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived in Kolkata on Monday to expedite the investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
This development follows a directive from the Calcutta High Court earlier this year, instructing the CBI to re-investigate the case. The team’s arrival comes just five days before the second anniversary of the victim’s death on August 8.
Upon reaching Kolkata, the special team held a detailed review meeting with officials from the CBI’s Kolkata unit to assess the progress of the investigation. Subsequently, they visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, inspecting the seminar room within the hospital premises, identified as the crime scene.
This event follows recent changes within the investigation team. In response to concerns raised by the victim’s parents regarding the pace of the inquiry, the CBI appointed Sandipani Garg to replace the previous investigating officer, Seema Pahuja. The victim’s family had alleged shortcomings in the earlier investigation.
Last week, the CBI submitted its 11th status report on the progress of the new investigation to a court in Sealdah, Kolkata.
The body of the young doctor was discovered in a seminar hall on August 9, 2024. Investigators determined that she was raped and murdered during her duty hours. This incident sparked widespread protests across West Bengal and other parts of the country, igniting public outrage and demands for justice.
Initially, the Kolkata Police investigated the case, but it was later transferred to the CBI following court intervention.
Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer associated with the Kolkata Police, is the sole accused in this case and is currently serving a life sentence.
The Calcutta High Court’s order for a fresh investigation and the formation of a new team has once again drawn national attention to one of the most high-profile crimes involving a medical professional in recent years.
