Kolkata, May 12: Following the assignment of the investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, the late personal assistant of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials arrived at the crime scene in Madhyagram, North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday.
Previously, the special investigation team of the West Bengal police was handling the case. However, this morning, CBI officials officially took over the investigation from the state police and proceeded to the murder site.
The state police’s special investigation team had already arrested three shooters: Mayank Raj Mishra, Vicky Maurya, and Raj Singh, all of whom are sharpshooters. They are currently in police custody in West Bengal.
Sources familiar with the case revealed that CBI investigators plan to request the custody of the three arrested individuals for further questioning.
Chandranath Rath was murdered on May 6 by assailants on motorcycles. His assassination occurred just two days after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were announced on May 4, which saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 207 seats, reducing the ruling Trinamool Congress’s seats to only 80.
On the night of May 6, Rath was returning home from a party event when a four-wheeler blocked his vehicle at an intersection in Madhyagram. Preliminary investigations indicate that after being stopped by the other vehicle, one of two motorcycles that had been following Rath’s car pulled up alongside it. The assailant on the motorcycle fired approximately 10 shots at close range.
Rath died at the scene, while his driver, Budhadev Bera, sustained serious injuries. Subsequent investigations revealed that the number plates of both the four-wheeler that stopped Rath’s vehicle and the motorcycles used in the murder were fake.
