Nagpur, May 18: Union Minister Ramdas Athawale recently shared his views on several significant issues, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving Sweden’s highest honor, the caste census, political dynamics in Kerala, and the NEET paper leak.
Athawale expressed pride in Modi’s recognition, stating it is a moment of glory for India. He emphasized that Modi has established himself as a popular and strong leader on the global stage.
Regarding the caste census, Athawale noted that the census scheduled for 2021 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has now decided to conduct a caste-based census.
He explained that this initiative will provide accurate data on the population and percentage of each caste. It will also reveal the economic status of various communities, highlighting how many are impoverished and how many are affluent. Athawale believes this will enable the government to better deliver schemes and assistance to all sections of society.
He also addressed the reservation benefits for the Buddhist community, mentioning that several political parties and organizations had protested for this cause, including his own. Following these movements, the then Prime Minister decided that individuals from Scheduled Castes (SC) who convert to Buddhism would continue to receive SC-ST reservation benefits.
Athawale urged those identifying as Buddhists to also mention their original caste.
In response to comments made by West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul, he stated that India is our mother, and there should be no hesitation in referring to India as ‘Mother’ by its residents. Every Indian should feel proud to call India ‘Mother.’
Commenting on the recent swearing-in of Kerala’s new Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, Athawale took a jab at Rahul Gandhi, questioning why it took Congress so long to decide on a name for the Chief Minister. He extended his best wishes to Satheesan and assured that if any proposals come from Kerala, they would be addressed with utmost support, transcending politics.
On the NEET paper leak issue, Athawale disagreed with Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion that Modi should apologize. He asserted that there is no need for an apology, as the CBI is investigating the matter. Those found guilty should face severe penalties, including charges of treason.
