Captain Gill Faces Challenge to Maintain Strong Record Against Sri Lanka

New Delhi, August 14: The two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka is set to begin on Saturday, August 15. The first Test will take place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Captain Shubman Gill will face the tough challenge of upholding India’s impressive record against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the home team will strive to trap Indian batsmen in their spin web.

India and Sri Lanka have played a total of 46 Test matches so far. Out of these, India has won 22 matches, while Sri Lanka has secured victory in 7. The remaining 17 matches ended in a draw. Notably, India has not lost a Test match to Sri Lanka in the last 11 years. The last defeat came in 2015, and since then, India has won 8 out of 10 matches, with 2 ending in a draw.

In Sri Lanka, India has played 24 Test matches, winning 9, losing 7, and drawing 8. The last time India toured Sri Lanka for a Test series was in 2017, where under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, India dominated with a 3-0 victory.

The Indian batting lineup will heavily rely on Shubman Gill and KL Rahul. The team management will also look for significant contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja. With Sai Sudharsan absent, Devdutt Padikkal may get a chance at number three. However, in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the trio of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Barar will face the challenge of performing well. India is expected to field a spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, and Jadeja in the first Test.

On the other hand, despite losing the Test series in the West Indies, Sri Lanka can pose a significant challenge to India on home soil. The batting lineup, featuring Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, and Dinesh Chandimal, is expected to deliver strong performances. In bowling, Prabath Jayasuriya could prove to be a conundrum for Indian batsmen. His record at Galle International Cricket Stadium has been impressive. Ramesh Mendis and Keshan Nuwanththa, who troubled Indian batsmen in the warm-up match with their spinning deliveries, could also make an impact.
