Colombo, August 14: The Indian cricket team is set to play its 600th Test match against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the team aims to maintain its impressive record against Sri Lanka. Gill stated that the primary goal is to secure a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year.
Currently, India stands fifth in the WTC points table. To qualify for the WTC final at The Oval in June 2027, the team must win nearly all of its remaining matches.
During a press conference, Gill expressed his comfort in his role, noting, “I feel that the progress we have made over the past year has been very encouraging, and we are taking the right steps in the right direction.”
Gill emphasized, “Clearly, the main objective is to play in the World Test Championship final next year. We have about nine Test matches ahead, and I believe we need to win six or seven of them to have a good chance of qualifying. Therefore, this series is crucial for us, and we have prepared well.”
Unlike previous tours, the Indian team arrived in Sri Lanka early this time. They also participated in a three-day warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI. Gill remarked, “Adapting to the conditions is never easy for players, and I think most of our players need some time to acclimatize. Not many have played a lot of matches here, so the extra time for preparation is definitely beneficial.”
Despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Gill expressed confidence in the pace attack. He particularly praised Prasidh Krishna, stating, “Gurnoor Barar is an excellent bowler as he can generate good pace and bounce with the old ball, but Prasidh has been bowling well lately, as we saw in the warm-up match. This makes it a tough decision. Prasidh is in the best form of his career.”
Gill added, “Bumrah is not in the team, but I think this is a great opportunity for other bowlers to make their mark in the series. To take wickets, you have to try different things. You need to create opportunities, especially on the first and second days. The wicket may not offer much assistance, so how can you build pressure? It’s essential to set up various creative fielding positions.”
Gill also praised Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a century in the warm-up match. He noted, “Devdutt has been here with India A before and performed well. He has all the skills and abilities necessary to succeed in this format. The wind can play a significant role in open fields.”
He further explained, “As batsmen, we discuss in team meetings that if we need to play aggressively against spinners, we must consider whether the wind is in our favor or against us. We should look to use that situation to our advantage rather than trying to fight it. Perhaps this is the key difference between playing in Sri Lanka and India, where most grounds are enclosed by stands. In open fields, the wind plays a major role.”
