Ottawa, April 20: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has highlighted that the country’s previous strengths, built on close ties with the United States, have now become “weaknesses” that need to be addressed through global trade diversification.
In a video message shared on social media titled “Forward Guidance,” Carney assessed the current state of Canada-U.S. relations. He stated, “The U.S. has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising tariffs to levels not seen since the Great Depression.” This comment referred specifically to the heavy tariffs impacting Canada’s automobile, steel, and lumber industries.
Since the beginning of 2025, the U.S. has imposed several stringent tariffs on Canadian exports, including a 25% tariff on various goods and up to 50% on steel and aluminum. These actions have significantly affected North American supply chains and pressured Ottawa to seek new economic alternatives.
Carney noted that his government has established 20 new trade agreements across four continents in the past year. These efforts include attracting global investment, coordinating provincial trade regulations within Canada, and doubling clean energy capacity to mitigate external instability.
He remarked, “Hope is not a plan, and nostalgia is not a strategy,” indicating that Canada will not wait for a return to the old framework of bilateral cooperation.
Carney also pledged to keep the public informed about the country’s economic diversification efforts. He emphasized that while the government’s plans are gaining momentum, structural economic changes will take time.
He pointed out that the tariffs imposed by former President Trump have adversely affected workers in the auto and steel industries. Additionally, he noted that the prevailing uncertainty is causing businesses to hesitate in making investments.
