Mumbai, April 22: The inaugural India-Japan Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategic Dialogue held in Mumbai marks a significant step towards enhancing collaboration in emerging technologies between the two nations.
Co-chaired by Amit A. Shukla, Joint Secretary (Cyber Diplomacy) of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, and Takahiro Hanada, Deputy Assistant Minister for Cybersecurity from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the dialogue brought together representatives from various ministries, departments, and agencies of both governments.
A key session featured representatives from both governments and the AI industry, fostering direct engagement. The discussions focused on strategic cooperation across the entire AI stack. The primary goals included promoting co-creation, enhancing policy alignment, and encouraging the development of AI solutions in industrial sectors, all aimed at establishing a robust, innovative, and trustworthy AI ecosystem.
The dialogue also explored ways to facilitate the international mobility of AI experts and expand joint research through exchanges and collaborative projects. Furthermore, both sides discussed mutual cooperation in AI governance, policy-making, and on multilateral platforms.
This strategic dialogue advances the ‘India-Japan AI Cooperation Initiative,’ which was announced by the Prime Ministers of India and Japan in August 2025.
Collaboration in this field is a central pillar of the India-Japan joint vision for the next decade. Both countries reiterated their commitment to jointly address the challenges and opportunities that will arise in the AI sector over the coming years. The aim is to assist each nation in achieving its domestic goals while bringing their peoples closer than ever before.
