New Delhi, August 6: Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet’s Economic Affairs Committee has approved the development of a 135.871-kilometer, four-lane access-controlled corridor between Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Modi on the social media platform X.
In his post, Modi emphasized the significant boost to connectivity and development in Assam. The approved corridor will reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and alleviate traffic congestion through various bypasses. The project will also include an emergency landing facility in Tezpur, bridges, flyovers, underpasses, and service roads, thereby strengthening seamless connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The project will be developed under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model at a cost of ₹8,970.20 crores. An emergency landing facility, spanning 4.9 kilometers on the Tezpur bypass, has been finalized in coordination with the Indian Air Force. This will help reduce traffic congestion on National Highway 27 (East-West Corridor) along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River. Additionally, five major bypasses, totaling 58.7 kilometers in length, will be constructed in densely populated areas such as Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dhekiajuli, and Tezpur to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
The project includes the construction of 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, and an elephant underpass on the Tezpur bypass. To ensure smooth movement on the controlled-access highway, 46 underpasses and a 210-kilometer service road with 19 flyovers will also be built.
This initiative is expected to nearly double the average travel speed, halve travel time, improve overall road safety, reduce fuel consumption, and lower vehicle operating costs. It will enhance regional mobility and promote socio-economic development.
The corridor will seamlessly connect major economic, social, and operational centers in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. It will also provide better access to eight PM Gati Shakti economic centers (eight industrial parks), two social centers (Darang and Udalguri aspirational districts), three major tourist destinations (Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga National Park, and Orang National Park), and seven logistics centers (three major railway stations, two airports, and two waterway terminals), thereby accelerating passenger transport and freight movement across the region.
