The government has placed the revival of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and the expansion of BharatNet among its top priorities. The aim is to help the state-run telecom operator move from operating profits to full profitability in the coming years.

On Friday, Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said, “We have done wonderfully, but I think we have a much greater responsibility going forward. One, reviving BSNL. Because it is about reviving trust in government public sector units. It is an extremely important exercise, and we have been doing quite a good job in that area.”
In the second quarter of FY26, BSNL reported revenue of ₹5,347 crore along with an average revenue per user (ARPU) of ₹92. The telecom operator has added nearly 1,00,000 new 4G sites using indigenously developed technology. Its network is expected to be upgraded to 5G by next year.
The minister also highlighted the progress of the government’s rural broadband mission. “Second, ensuring BharatNet. We have learned so much over the BharatNet phase one and phase two. And now executing the BharatNet phase three,” he said. According to him, recent monitoring of BharatNet has shown world-class results.
