BROs Project Deepak Celebrates 66 Years of Service in the Himalayas

New Delhi, May 4: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated the 66th anniversary of Project Deepak on Monday. Established in 1961, Project Deepak is one of BRO’s oldest and most significant initiatives. Its responsibilities span across the challenging and sensitive districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti.

According to the Ministry of Defence, road construction and maintenance in these areas are extremely challenging due to high altitudes, heavy snowfall, and difficult geographical conditions. The anniversary was not just a formal event but a celebration of the crucial role Project Deepak has played in national security and the development of remote areas over the past six decades.

Project Deepak has constructed several historically and strategically important roads in the Western Himalayas, including significant portions of the Hindustan-Tibet Road and the Manali-Leh Highway. These roads have not only connected border areas to the rest of the country but have also strengthened military mobility and supply chains, which are vital for national security.

Managing a road network of approximately 1,100 kilometers, Project Deepak has consistently maintained road connectivity in high Himalayan regions. This has enhanced the operational capacity and preparedness of security forces stationed in border areas. In addition to infrastructure development, Project Deepak has made notable contributions to disaster management and humanitarian assistance. In 2023, teams from this project successfully executed several challenging rescue operations.

In May 2023, nearly 300 drivers stranded at the Baralacha La Pass were safely rescued. In July 2023, over 250 individuals were saved from the Chandratal area under difficult conditions.

The Ministry of Defence states that these operations are a testament to BRO’s rapid response and professional efficiency. Over its 66-year journey, Project Deepak has not only built roads but has also played a vital role in connecting remote and border areas to the mainstream of the country. Today, this project stands as a strong pillar in the fields of national security, regional development, and disaster relief. According to the BRO, this anniversary is dedicated to all personnel who remain committed to serving the nation under challenging circumstances.
