New Delhi, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The recent BRICS summit held in New Delhi has been hailed as a significant success by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. He noted that the event showcased India’s growing global influence and diplomatic strength. A total of 32 delegations participated, including representatives from 11 member countries, 10 partner nations, four regional organizations, and seven international bodies.
Jaishankar emphasized that the summit’s standout feature was India’s robust leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Most countries were represented at the head of state or government level, with notable leaders in attendance, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and the Crown Prince of the UAE, among others.
The summit also saw participation from key figures such as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and heads of organizations like the World Trade Organization and the World Health Organization. Jaishankar highlighted the strong rapport and collaborative spirit among the leaders, particularly between Modi and his counterparts.
He pointed out that the summit occurred during a time of significant political and geopolitical tensions worldwide. Despite these challenges, the BRICS nations successfully reached consensus on several critical issues. They particularly focused on promoting peace, security, and stability in relation to conflicts in West Asia and the Middle East. The leaders also stressed the importance of maintaining global trade, supply chains, and energy security, while ensuring the safety of citizens and infrastructure.
The External Affairs Minister remarked that the summit was not merely about resolving differences. It provided an opportunity for leaders from various countries, who might not typically interact, to engage in open dialogue on pressing global issues. This interaction fostered positive discussions on the challenges facing the world today.
A major focus of the summit was enhancing the global economy, development, technology, and amplifying the voice of the Global South. Jaishankar stated that it sent a clear message that the concerns and needs of developing nations should receive greater attention on global platforms. The two central themes of the conference—”reform” and “resilience”—played a crucial role in uniting member countries and facilitating agreement on various topics.
On the issue of terrorism, Jaishankar noted a strong consensus among BRICS nations. They collectively condemned any act of terrorism, denouncing the attack that occurred in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, as unacceptable. The member states emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of terrorism, particularly cross-border terrorism, and rejected double standards.
Jaishankar concluded by stating that the entire summit reflected Prime Minister Modi’s message of “dialogue, diplomacy, and development.” The active participation of leaders from around the world demonstrated the effectiveness of this message on a global scale. He acknowledged initial skepticism about the summit’s success but affirmed that it concluded successfully in New Delhi, showcasing India’s diplomatic capabilities once again under Modi’s leadership.
