Brazils Coach Ancelotti Defends Team After Draw Against Morocco in FIFA World Cup Opener

New Jersey, June 14: In the opening match of Group C at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Brazil faced a strong challenge from Morocco, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti defended his team, stating that no team can be expected to start a tournament perfectly.

The five-time world champions encountered difficulties early on in the match held in New Jersey. Morocco capitalized on Brazil’s shaky performance, with Ismail Saibari scoring a stunning goal to give Morocco a 1-0 lead, putting Brazil under pressure.

However, Brazil quickly responded. Star forward Vinicius Junior equalized in the 32nd minute with an impressive goal. Following this, Brazil improved their performance in the second half compared to the first.

According to Xinhua, Ancelotti mentioned in the post-match press conference, “I think we need to reflect on our performance in the match. We did not play well. We were unbalanced and lost possession multiple times. We played slightly better in the second half, but we cannot lose hope. This was the first match, and we cannot expect to be perfect from the start. We need to look ahead and improve. You cannot win the World Cup based on the first match.”

Ancelotti made two substitutions at halftime, bringing in Danilo for right-back Roger Ibanez and Fabinho for midfielder Casemiro. These changes provided Brazil with stability, allowing them to control the game as Morocco began to tire. Ancelotti dismissed concerns that the result could affect the team’s morale ahead of their next two group-stage matches against Haiti and Scotland.

He stated, “We have complete confidence. In football, nothing is ever perfect. When things don’t go your way, you have to acknowledge the flaws and strive to improve. That’s what we will do. Throughout this tournament, we will stick to this principle. It was a tough match at the start. The team was anxious, and we didn’t maintain possession. The second half was slightly better, but it was still challenging, and I am confident we will perform better in the next match.”
