Cincinnati, August 19: Brandon Nakashima secured his place in the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open by defeating Daniil Medvedev with a score of 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-1. The match lasted 2 hours and 51 minutes.
During the second set, Nakashima faced a critical moment, trailing 0-40 while serving at 4-5. However, he responded with calm ball striking and fearless play, completely shifting the momentum against the former Cincinnati champion Medvedev.
In the next round, Nakashima will face Nuno Borges, who ended a five-match losing streak against 13th seed Andrey Rublev with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, marking his sixth appearance in the fourth round of a Masters 1000 event.
In another match, Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo 7-5, 6-1, advancing to the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 event. This marks Auger-Aliassime’s fifth appearance in the fourth round at Cincinnati over the past six years. He will next compete against Frances Tiafoe, the 2024 finalist, who triumphed over fellow American and good friend Learner Tien in a match lasting two hours and nine minutes, with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
On the other side of Ohio, Taylor Fritz extended his winning streak on American soil to seven matches with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over rising Spanish player Daniel Merida. The 28-year-old Fritz, who lifted the trophy at the ATP 500 event in Washington earlier this month, has reached the Round of 16 in Cincinnati for the fourth time in the last five years.
Fritz’s next opponent will be Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell.
