BJP Unveils First List of 88 Candidates for Assam Assembly Elections

Guwahati, March 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections, announcing the names of 88 contenders. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from the Jalukbari constituency, while the party has also nominated Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently switched from Congress.

The list includes notable figures such as ministers Ranjit Kumar Das, Ashok Singhal, Ajanta Neog, Chandramohan Patwari, Ranoj Pegu, Sanjay Kishan, Pijush Hazarika, and Bimal Bora. Senior minister Chandramohan Patwari will run from Tihu, while Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will contest from her previous seat in Golaghat.

Ranjit Kumar Das has been assigned to Bhawanipur-Sorbhog, Pijush Hazarika to Jagiroad (ST), Ashok Singhal to Dhekiajuli, Ranoj Pegu to Dhemaji (ST), Bimal Bora to Tingkhong, and Sanjay Kishan to Makum.

In urban constituencies, the BJP has nominated Pradyut Bordoloi from Dispur, Diplu Ranjan Sarma from New Guwahati, and Vijay Kumar Gupta from Guwahati Central. Notably, Bordoloi joined the BJP on Wednesday, severing his long-standing ties with Congress, and has resigned from the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.

The party has also fielded candidates in key areas of Upper Assam, traditionally considered its stronghold, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Digboi, Doom Dooma, and Margherita. Sarma will contest from Margherita, while Prashant Phukan will represent Dibrugarh and Suren Phukan will run from Digboi.

Additionally, the BJP has announced candidates for several seats in Central and Lower Assam, including Rangia, Nalbari, Barhampur, Samaguri, and Nagaon. The party has nominated Jitu Goswami from Barhampur and Rupak Sarma from Nagaon-Batadraba.

For tribal and reserved seats, candidates have been announced for Boko-Chaygaon (ST), Tamulpur (ST), Dhemaji (ST), Majuli (ST), Bokajan (ST), and Difu (ST).

This list was finalized during a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee, chaired by party president Nitin Naveen, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah also in attendance.
