Thiruvananthapuram, March 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a strategic move to quell internal dissent by reintroducing senior leader Kummanam Rajasekharan as a candidate for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. This decision comes as the party released its second list of candidates on Thursday, aiming to address grievances among its members.
On March 16, the BJP had announced its first list of 47 candidates, which notably excluded prominent figures like Rajasekharan. This omission sparked discontent within the party ranks, prompting leadership to reconsider their candidate selections just a day later.
In the newly released list, Rajasekharan has been nominated to contest from Aranmula, a constituency located near the famous Sabarimala temple. He gained notoriety for his strong opposition to allowing women of all ages to enter the temple, a stance that resonated with a significant voter demographic at the time.
The second list also features fresh faces, including renowned cardiologist Dr. Pratap, who recently joined the party and is set to contest from Kollam. His inclusion signals the BJP’s strategy to enhance its appeal by incorporating well-known professionals into its ranks.
Despite these efforts, the BJP faces a formidable challenge in Kerala. The party currently holds no seats in the 140-member assembly, having lost its only seat in Nemom, which it won for the first time in 2016.
It is noteworthy that voting in Kerala is scheduled for April 9. Various parties, including the BJP, have intensified their election campaigns in a bid to secure power in the state.
