BJP Secures Third Consecutive Victory in Tingkhong, Assam Assembly Elections

Guwahati, May 4: In the recent Assam Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again demonstrated its strength by winning the Tingkhong seat. BJP candidate Bimal Bora defeated Congress’s Bipul Gogoi by a significant margin of 49,026 votes. Bora secured a total of 88,912 votes, while Gogoi managed only 39,886. This victory further solidifies the BJP’s hold on Tingkhong.

Located in the Dibrugarh district, this rural constituency is nestled among the tea gardens and rice fields of Upper Assam. Once a quiet agricultural area, Tingkhong has transformed into a crucial political seat where active voter participation and shifting political loyalties shape electoral outcomes. Historically a stronghold of the Congress party, the BJP has made significant inroads in recent years, establishing it as one of their reliable constituencies.

Established in 1967, this assembly seat has witnessed 12 elections to date. The Congress party has won here five times, including three consecutive victories from 1996 to 2006. The BJP, on the other hand, has claimed victory in 2016 and 2021, and now in 2026, marking their third consecutive win. Other parties, such as the United Socialist Party, Janata Party, Assam Gana Parishad, and an independent candidate, have also won in the past.

In 2011, Congress’s Atuwa Munda won against AGP’s Anup Phukan. However, the BJP changed the dynamics in 2016 when Bimal Bora defeated Munda by 18,338 votes. Bora maintained his lead in 2021, defeating Congress again by 28,394 votes. His latest victory showcases the growing popularity of the BJP in the region.

The BJP’s influence has also increased in the Lok Sabha elections. While Congress had a narrow lead in 2009, the BJP gained a clear advantage in 2014 and 2019. Although the margin decreased in 2024, the party still retained its lead.

Voter numbers in Tingkhong have consistently risen. According to the final voter list for 2026, there are 177,658 voters, an increase of 9,111 from 2024. Following the 2023 delimitation, the voter count has seen significant growth. In previous years, the numbers were 144,548 in 2021, 136,088 in 2019, 121,571 in 2016, and 115,860 in 2011.

Socially, no single community dominates the constituency. Scheduled Tribe voters comprise about 12.46%, while Scheduled Caste voters make up around 1.51%. The Muslim voter population is relatively low. This entirely rural constituency has no urban voters, and the voter turnout has been notably high—73.75% in 2011, 85.23% in 2016, 77.15% in 2019, and 82.46% in 2021.

Geographically, Tingkhong is situated in the fertile plains of the Brahmaputra Valley, where tea and rice cultivation are predominant. The Dihing River and its tributaries support agriculture. The region’s history is linked to the Ahom dynasty, believed to have been established by King Suhungmung, with later influences from the Tungkhungia dynasty.

The local economy primarily relies on tea gardens, agriculture, and small businesses. National Highway-15 and state roads provide access, with the nearest railway station at Naharkatia, approximately 20 km away, and Dibrugarh’s Mohanbari Airport located about 80 km from the area.
