BJP Secures Dominance in Gujarat Local Elections, Winning All 15 Municipal Corporations

Gandhinagar, April 28: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a remarkable victory in the local self-governance elections across Gujarat. The party has retained control over all 15 municipal corporations and has also secured a significant majority in municipalities and panchayats.

Voting took place for 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats. Before the counting of votes began, the BJP had already won 732 seats uncontested out of a total of 10,005 seats.

According to the final results, the party won 78 municipalities, while the Congress managed to secure only six seats. At the district level, the BJP formed the government in 33 out of 34 district panchayats and won 253 out of 260 taluka panchayats. The remaining seats were shared between Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The BJP won in all district panchayats except for Narmada, where the AAP claimed 15 out of 22 seats, leaving the BJP with just seven. The AAP also made significant gains in Amreli district, capturing the Bagasra taluka panchayat for the first time.

In the municipal corporations, the BJP maintained a strong lead, winning all 15 bodies by large margins. In Surat, the party won 115 out of 120 seats, while the AAP’s representation dropped from 27 seats in 2021 to just four, with Congress securing only one seat.

Voting occurred for 192 seats across 48 wards in Ahmedabad. The BJP won two seats, Vasna and Thaltej, uncontested. The party contested elections for 190 seats and achieved a clear majority with 160 seats, maintaining its control over the municipal body since 2005.

The Congress contested 185 seats, while the AAP fielded candidates for 151 positions. A total of 877 nominations were canceled, and 22 candidates withdrew their nominations.

In other cities, the BJP won 65 out of 72 seats in Rajkot, 55 out of 58 in Vadodara, and 60 out of 64 in Jamnagar. The party also secured 41 out of 52 seats in Gandhidham and 47 out of 52 in Mehsana. Additionally, the BJP achieved near-total victories in Surendranagar and Nadiad, winning 51 out of 52 seats in both locations, and swept all 52 seats in Morbi and Porbandar. Other notable victories included 44 out of 52 in Bhavnagar, 50 out of 52 in Navsari, 37 out of 52 in Vapi, and 43 out of 52 in Karmasad-Anand. At the district panchayat level, the BJP dominated key areas.

In Kutch, the BJP won 30 out of 38 seats, while the Congress managed four. In Banaskantha, the BJP secured 32 seats compared to Congress’s 16. In Mehsana, the party won 38 out of 42 seats, three of which were uncontested. In Ahmedabad district, the BJP claimed 32 out of 34 seats, with Congress winning two. In Rajkot and Surat districts, the BJP won 34 out of 36 and 35 out of 36 seats, respectively.

In districts like Surendranagar, Porbandar, Amreli, and Kheda, the party either achieved complete victories or faced minimal opposition. The Congress managed to secure some wins in Banaskantha, Patan, and Tapi, while the presence of independents and other parties was minimal.

Overall, voter turnout was 57.13%. The turnout for municipal corporations was 49.02%, while municipalities saw a turnout of 59.50%. Rural areas experienced higher participation, with district panchayats recording 61.69% and taluka panchayats 62.38%.

These results are largely consistent with the 2021 local elections, where the BJP captured all municipal corporations and strengthened its position in urban centers, while the AAP emerged as a third party. Recent elections saw a significant decline in AAP’s urban presence, with only minor gains in select rural areas. Overall, the BJP won 7,491 seats, while Congress secured 1,740 seats, and other parties and independents garnered 755 seats.
