BJP Polling Agent Attacked in West Bengal Elections Amid Rising Violence

Nadia, April 29: Reports of violence and unrest have emerged from various regions of West Bengal during the second phase of the 2026 Assembly elections. A brutal assault on a polling agent in Chapra, Nadia district, has raised serious concerns about the electoral atmosphere.

The victim, Mosharraf Mir, a BJP polling agent, recounted that the incident occurred around 5:40 AM while he was on his way to the polling station. He stated, “We wanted the elections to be free and fair so that people could vote peacefully. However, some Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters were hiding in the house of Jan Ali Molla. Suddenly, 15 to 20 individuals emerged with bamboo sticks, iron rods, and weapons. They attacked me on the head with a rod. I fell down, but they continued to beat me. Four ISF agents were also present and were assaulted as well. After the attack, they fled the scene.”

Following this incident, reports of electoral violence have surfaced in several districts, with South 24 Parganas emerging as a hotspot for unrest.

Tension escalated in the Saihati area of the Bhangar Assembly constituency when All India Secular Front (AISF) MLA and candidate Mohammad Naushad Siddiqui arrived at a polling station. TMC supporters began chanting slogans upon his arrival, leading to further deterioration of the situation as Siddiqui and his supporters protested. Siddiqui accused TMC workers of deliberately trying to disrupt the peaceful voting that had been taking place since morning.

Central forces were deployed to control the situation, separating the two groups to restore order.

Violence was also reported in the Basanti area of South 24 Parganas, where TMC workers allegedly attacked BJP candidate Vikas Sardar and vandalized his vehicle. This incident occurred near booth number 76 while Sardar was on an inspection visit. Reports indicate that there was an attempt to snatch the gun from his security guard. Allegations have surfaced that despite the presence of central forces, they did not intervene, leading to ongoing tension in the area.

In the Shasan area of North 24 Parganas, TMC workers faced opposition from local villagers and AISF supporters. It is alleged that TMC workers attempted to intimidate voters, prompting the villagers to protest against them.

A clash occurred between AISF and TMC supporters at booth number 147 in Ramchandrapur of the Khanakul Assembly constituency in Hooghly district. AISF supporters claimed that TMC had illegally stationed their agents at the booth and had threatened their agents, preventing them from entering since Tuesday night. The arrival of AISF candidates at the scene further escalated tensions.

In Howrah district, voters expressed their anger at the Don Bosco school polling station in the Bally Assembly constituency due to a malfunctioning EVM machine. To manage the situation, central forces had to resort to baton charges, resulting in injuries to polling agents from Congress and TMC. Two individuals have been arrested, and a heavy police presence has been deployed at the site.

Despite these incidents, voting continues in the second phase, but the violence and unrest in several areas have cast doubts on the electoral process.
