BJP MPs Welcome Central Governments Fuel Tax Cut

New Delhi, March 28: BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Hema Malini expressed their support on Friday for the central government’s decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per liter. Following this reduction, the excise duty on petrol has decreased to ₹3 per liter, while diesel now has zero excise duty. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of rising global oil prices.

The tax cut comes amid concerns over price hikes due to the global energy crisis, which has been exacerbated by the conflict between the U.S. and Israel and the subsequent blockade of the Hormuz Strait.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, BJP MP Anurag Thakur began by thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for lowering the high excise duties on fuel. He noted that this move would provide significant relief to businesses and the general public at a time when global petrol and diesel prices are soaring.

Thakur emphasized that India may be the only country where a reduction in excise duty benefits all citizens. He also accused the Congress party of burdening voters by increasing VAT in Congress-ruled states.

He claimed that the Himachal Pradesh government is preparing to impose additional taxes on petrol and diesel, which would directly affect the common man. Thakur pointed out that the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh is working in this direction and has introduced a new law to impose a ₹5 tax on fuel, placing an additional burden on the public.

However, Chief Minister Sukhu reportedly clarified that the government has not yet implemented the new tax.

BJP MP Hema Malini also praised the government’s decision to cut excise duty on fuel, stating that this reduction is beneficial for the public and that the government is taking the right steps.

Meanwhile, the government has clarified that there will be no changes to the retail pump prices of petrol and diesel, and the excise duty cut will not translate into a reduction at the pump.
