New Delhi, August 3: BJP legislator and spokesperson for the Delhi government, Harish Khurana, stated on Sunday that the allegations made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi convenor Saurabh Bhardwaj regarding a bicycle scam in schools are baseless. He claimed that these accusations are an attempt to divert public attention from the scams in Punjab.
Khurana asserted that the allegations against AAP stem from a complaint by a company and are aimed at protecting Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who is embroiled in a school bag scam and six separate paper leak cases.
He noted that due to their defeat in Delhi, AAP leaders, including convenor Arvind Kejriwal, have lost their mental balance.
Khurana explained that the Punjab government created a tender process that excluded all local companies, resulting in a Delhi-based company purchasing four lakh bags with government funds. These bags were intended to be distributed for free to students in the 11th and 12th grades at government schools.
The BJP leader highlighted that the bags were made in the colors of the AAP flag—yellow and blue—and featured the Chief Minister’s photo. He likened distributing bags in the party’s colors to bribing students who will vote for the first time in the upcoming Punjab elections.
He further stated that local traders in Punjab who manufacture and sell school bags are dissatisfied with the AAP government for purchasing these bags at inflated prices from outside Punjab.
Khurana firmly denied any wrongdoing in the procurement of bicycles distributed to schoolgirls by the Delhi government, asserting that the bicycles were acquired through a completely transparent process.
He accused AAP leaders of consistently acting against the interests of Delhi and suggested that their unfounded accusations reflect their mentality.
The legislator from Motinagar mentioned that the bicycles come in various models and features, with market prices ranging from ₹4,000-5,000 to ₹40,000-50,000.
He reiterated that no bicycle scam has occurred in Delhi. Instead, he pointed out the ongoing school bag scam and multiple paper leak cases in Punjab, which have sparked protests in both Delhi and Punjab.
Khurana claimed that AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj is making unfounded allegations based on a commercial complaint to distract the public in Punjab and across the country.
