Gonda, August 10: BJP leader Brijbhushan Sharan Singh stated that the Congress party has no independent political standing in Uttar Pradesh. He believes that Congress can only gain electoral advantage by forming an alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP).
In an interview with a news agency, Singh commented on questions related to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, saying, “He has no standing of his own. He can only win some seats by riding on the shoulders of the Samajwadi Party. Congress has no standing in Uttar Pradesh. If they contest elections under an alliance, they might gain some benefit.”
Singh’s remarks come as the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approach, with Congress attempting to initiate discussions on seat-sharing with its ally, the Samajwadi Party.
However, the Samajwadi Party has not responded to Singh’s comments. When SP MP Ram Gopal Yadav was asked about the BJP leader’s statement, he replied, “What can we comment on that? I have nothing to say.”
Recently, Congress indicated that it wants to refocus on its organizational position and its relationship with the Samajwadi Party ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Rajendra Pal Gautam, Congress’s in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, stated that the party aims to contest the elections with “equality and respect.”
Both parties have previously formed electoral alliances in Uttar Pradesh. However, after the 2017 elections, where the alliance under the slogan “UP ke do ladke” did not yield expected results, the Samajwadi Party and Congress contested the 2022 Assembly elections separately.
Under the 2017 alliance agreement, Congress was allotted 106 of the 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. However, the party only managed to win seven seats. In the 2022 Assembly elections, when Congress contested alone, its seat count dwindled further, securing only two seats.
Nonetheless, the political dynamics between Congress and the Samajwadi Party shifted significantly after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The two parties collaborated to contest the parliamentary elections, winning a total of 43 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
