BJP Claims World Bank Report Validates Poverty Reduction Achievements Under Modi
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi highlights World Bank findings on poverty reduction in India, contrasting with Congresss actions.

New Delhi, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi, a national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rajya Sabha MP, addressed the media in New Delhi on Saturday. He emphasized that the World Bank’s 2025 report recognizes India’s significant progress in reducing poverty under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
According to the report, the rate of extreme poverty in India has plummeted from 27.6% in 2011 to just 2.6% in 2023. Furthermore, it noted that 84% of the population now earns more than 400 rupees daily. Trivedi asserted that both the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are committed to eradicating poverty and improving living standards, while accusing the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi of attempting to sow chaos in the country.
He criticized Congress for organizing a mock parliament, suggesting it was an attempt to placate their “heartbroken prince.” This event coincided with the World Bank’s announcement regarding India’s poverty reduction achievements, which he described as a stark contrast to the Congress party’s actions.
The World Bank’s report highlighted that India has achieved the fastest decline in poverty globally from 2011 to 2023. The percentage of people living in extreme poverty has dramatically decreased, with only 2.6% of the population now classified as extremely poor, down from over 27% a decade ago. Additionally, it revealed that around 57% of the Indian population earned less than $2 a day 13 to 14 years ago, a figure that has now reduced to just 16%.
Trivedi reiterated that the NDA government is dedicated to raising the standard of living for every citizen, achieving significant success in poverty alleviation, as confirmed by the World Bank. He referenced the Gini Index released by the World Bank in August 2025, which ranked India fourth among the most economically equal countries worldwide.
He contrasted the perspectives of Rahul Gandhi, who previously stated that poverty is merely a mindset, with that of Prime Minister Modi, highlighting the tangible progress made under Modi’s leadership. The mock parliament, he argued, is rendered meaningless by the World Bank’s solid data.
Trivedi concluded by criticizing those who claim India’s economy is failing, pointing out their invitation to billionaire Elon Musk to visit India. He remarked that their contradictory statements reveal a disconnection from reality, urging Congress and Gandhi to reflect on the truth versus their narrative.
