Andhra Pradesh Police Injures Suspect in Attack on Schoolgirl

A suspect in an attack on a schoolgirl in Andhra Pradesh was injured in a police shooting during his attempted arrest.

Anantapur, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : In Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, a police shooting resulted in injuries to a suspect on Sunday. The individual, identified as Hemant, was accused of attacking a 10th-grade student with a power saw the previous day.

The incident occurred in the Atmakur forest area as police attempted to apprehend Hemant, who was trying to evade arrest. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital in Anantapur, though details on his condition remain unclear. Police have implemented strict security measures at the hospital.

According to law enforcement, officers fired warning shots to compel Hemant to surrender. When he attempted to flee, they shot at him, reportedly discharging around six rounds.

The attack on the schoolgirl took place at the District Council High School in Rapthadu, where Hemant, a relative of the victim, allegedly assaulted her after she rejected his advances. The girl sustained severe injuries and was initially treated at a government hospital before being transferred to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, where she is currently receiving care. Doctors have indicated that the next 48 hours are critical for her recovery.

On Sunday, Andhra Pradesh’s Education and Information Technology Minister Nara Lokesh visited the hospital to check on the girl’s condition and meet with her medical team. He described the incident, which occurred around 10 a.m., as alarming, stating that a man entered the school grounds with a saw and attacked the student. After receiving the news, he promptly alerted police and health officials.

The girl required extensive treatment, with doctors working for nearly eight hours to stabilize her condition before her transfer to Bengaluru. Following a lengthy surgery that lasted approximately 12 hours, she was placed in the ICU. Lokesh emphasized the fragility of her situation and urged the people of Andhra Pradesh to pray for her swift recovery, referring to her as “our daughter” and highlighting the need for support during this challenging time.
