Shivamogga, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest in Shivamogga district’s Shikaripura town, condemning what they claim are the Karnataka government‘s anti-farmer policies. BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra accused the government of failing to understand and resolve the issues faced by farmers in the state.
Addressing the gathering, Vijayendra explained that the protest aimed to alert the government to the hardships faced by farmers and to demand action on their grievances. He referenced the Gadgil and Kasturirangan committee reports, highlighting the challenges encountered by farmers living in forest-adjacent areas. He emphasized that it is unacceptable for these committees to have been formed solely based on orders from the state’s High Court or the Supreme Court.
Vijayendra pointed out that these committees were established during the tenure of the previous Congress-led UPA government. As a result of the reports’ implications, farmers in forest-bordering regions have been compelled to take to the streets in protest.
He specifically called out Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa, urging him to understand his responsibilities as a state minister before participating in protests. Vijayendra criticized the government’s inaction regarding irrigation issues affecting farmers in Shikaripura and surrounding areas.
He claimed the Chief Minister lacks the time to grasp the farmers’ challenges, while the government overlooks their difficulties instead of seeking solutions. Vijayendra also questioned the government’s achievements in addressing the basic needs of the poor and vulnerable segments of society.
Reflecting on the Congress government’s time in power, he noted that while the government has made numerous promises regarding its guarantee schemes, it has failed to provide essential support to the impoverished. He alleged that in the past three and a half years, the government has not been able to provide housing for a single poor person or implement any Ganga Kalyan scheme. Furthermore, he criticized the government’s reluctance to offer pensions to disabled individuals.
Vijayendra concluded by asserting that the government is more focused on political announcements than on resolving the real issues faced by the populace. He praised the discipline and fighting spirit shown by BJP workers and farmers during the protest.
