BJP Accused of Political Maneuvering Over Womens Reservation Bill: Ram Gopal Yadav

New Delhi, April 18: The political debate surrounding the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill (131st Amendment of the Constitution) is intensifying as it remains unpassed in the Lok Sabha. Senior leader of the Samajwadi Party, Ram Gopal Yadav, has criticized the central government, claiming that the entire situation is driven by political motives.

Yadav stated, “This bill was passed in 2023, so why is there a need for amendments? Even after proposing amendments, you notified the old bill just two nights ago. Therefore, there was no need for a vote. The entire world knows this is being done for electoral reasons; their intentions are political.”

The SP MP emphasized that the constitutional amendment bill aims to implement reservations for women in legislatures by 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats. He accused the BJP of deliberately politicizing the issue, asserting that nothing substantial will come of it. “The public is now aware and understands everything,” he added.

He further pointed out that despite introducing amendments, the government went ahead with notifying the old Women’s Reservation Bill. “There was no basis for debate or voting. The entire nation knows this was initiated because elections are taking place in West Bengal. They forget that Mamata Banerjee has already implemented a quota of over 40 percent for women.”

In response to the rejection of the 131st Amendment Bill, Congress leader Udit Raj remarked, “When the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in 2023, our leader Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party clearly stated that until delimitation and census are completed, women should be given reservations on the same 543 seats for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has always been completely opposed to women’s rights and did not agree to this.”
