New Delhi, April 18: The political debate surrounding the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill continues to intensify. The ruling party is accusing Congress and the opposition of being anti-women for not supporting the amendment. In response, Congress has clarified its stance, stating that while they support the Women’s Reservation Bill, they will not endorse the accompanying delimitation proposal.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the media, asserting, “The Congress party has always been in favor of women’s reservation. We supported and passed the Women’s Reservation Bill in 2023. However, the central government has now introduced another amendment under the guise of women’s reservation, which includes provisions for delimitation. This move is an attempt by the central government to gain power by merging the women’s reservation and delimitation bills.”
Kharge further stated, “We told the government that if they truly want to provide women’s reservation, it should be done within the framework of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. After the census and delimitation, they can expand it for the next elections, but they are unwilling to do so. The central government’s intention seems to be to alter the constitutional framework and consolidate executive power.”
Previously, Kharge remarked, “PM Modi and Home Minister Shah have attempted to use half of the country’s population as a shield to push for delimitation, which undermines our democracy, constitution, and federalism. Their tactics have been recognized by a united opposition, leading to the failure of the constitutional amendment bill. I express heartfelt gratitude to all opposition leaders. BJP leaders aimed to tarnish India’s democracy for their political gain; their scheme has now backfired. We once again demand that women be granted 33% reservation in the 2029 elections as per the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ passed in 2023. This will be a true test of PM’s commitment to ‘Nari Shakti’.”
