Patna, August 5: The Bihar Vigilance Investigation Bureau has arrested a Panchayat Secretary in West Champaran district for accepting a bribe of ₹15,000. The official was accused of demanding a bribe in exchange for payments related to development work.
Following a preliminary verification, the bureau’s team conducted a trap operation leading to the arrest. A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged under Vigilance Police Station Case No. 092/26, dated July 31, 2026. The arrested Panchayat Secretary, Shankar Prasad, was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe.
The complaint was filed by Parvez Kauser, who alleged that the Panchayat Secretary was demanding a bribe for the pending payment of water supply repair work done by his firm, Retix Enterprises. After receiving the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau verified the allegations, confirming the demand for a bribe. Subsequently, a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Kripal Chandra Jaiswal was formed to carry out the operation.
On Wednesday, the team set a trap at a cooperative camp being held at the Maldahiya Madarsa in the Naraktia Ganj block, where they apprehended the accused while he was accepting the bribe. The Vigilance Bureau has stated that the arrested Panchayat Secretary is currently under interrogation. He will be presented before the Special Vigilance Court in Muzaffarpur, and further investigative actions are ongoing.
According to the bureau, this marks the 92nd FIR registered against corruption in 2026, with this being the 85th case related to trap operations. So far, a total of 87 accused individuals have been caught red-handed, and ₹31,66,800 in bribe money has been recovered. The Vigilance Bureau also noted that in 2025, a total of 101 trap cases were registered, resulting in the recovery of ₹37,80,300 in bribes. The bureau has assured that actions against corruption will continue unabated.
