Bihar MP Urges CM Nitish Kumar for Compensation to Farmers Affected by Recent Weather

Patna, March 22: Rajya Sabha MP Sudhakar Singh has written to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, demanding adequate compensation for farmers whose crops were damaged by recent rains and hailstorms.

In his letter, Singh highlighted that from March 19 to March 21, a sudden change in weather led to severe storms and continuous rainfall, causing significant losses to farmers in the state. This natural disaster has particularly affected rabi crops such as wheat, maize, mustard, and pulse crops like arhar and lentils.

Singh noted that thousands of farmers in Bihar are facing deep distress and economic hardship due to this unexpected calamity. The destruction of ready-to-harvest rabi crops not only results in financial loss but also severely impacts the livelihoods and future prospects of these farmers.

He urged the state government to form a high-level team to conduct a comprehensive survey of the affected areas. Singh called for a transparent and prompt assessment of the crop losses to ensure that impacted farmers receive fair and dignified compensation corresponding to their losses.

It is important to note that recent rains and hailstorms across various districts in the state have caused extensive damage to crops. The combination of strong winds and heavy rainfall, along with severe hail, has significantly harmed wheat crops that were ready for harvest. Additionally, crops of mango and litchi have also suffered extensive damage. The strong winds and hail have caused blossoms to fall, raising concerns about a substantial decline in fruit production this year.
