Bihar Minister Defends Deepotsav Celebration for PM Modis Birthday

Patna, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : Bihar Minister Santosh Kumar Suman defended the planned ‘Deepotsav’ celebration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on Thursday. He stated that there is no reason to object to lighting lamps as part of the festivities.

Responding to criticisms, Suman questioned why celebrating the current Prime Minister’s birthday through ‘Deepotsav’ should be seen as controversial, especially when the birthday of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, has long been celebrated as ‘Children’s Day’ on November 14.

He emphasized that a birthday is a significant occasion in a person’s life and can be celebrated in various ways. In Indian culture, lamps (diyas) hold special importance, traditionally symbolizing light, auspiciousness, knowledge, and well-being.

Suman further remarked that lighting lamps for a birthday should be viewed as an expression of Indian cultural traditions and sentiments. He noted that in recent years, cutting cakes and blowing out candles have become popular ways to celebrate birthdays.

While he does not see anything wrong with adopting modern practices, Suman insisted that this should not mean abandoning India’s cultural traditions. He clarified that lighting lamps instead of blowing out candles is not a political act but a way to remain connected to India’s cultural identity.

According to Suman, the purpose of organizing ‘Deepotsav’ on PM Modi’s birthday is to promote this cultural consciousness. He believes that India can progress by maintaining a balance between modernity and traditional values.

He added that if people light lamps in their homes, institutions, and public spaces to wish for PM Modi’s good health, longevity, and success, it should be seen not as a subject of controversy but as a positive expression of Indian culture.

“Birthdays should be a celebration of light, not darkness. Lamps should be lit, good wishes should be shared, and the new generation should advance while staying connected to their cultural roots,” he concluded, highlighting the essence behind the proposed ‘Deepotsav.’
