Barcelona Mourns the Passing of Jorge Messi, Father of Lionel Messi

New Delhi, August 9: Barcelona has paid tribute to Jorge Messi, the father of club legend Lionel Messi, who passed away at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness in Rosario, Argentina, on Saturday.

The club expressed its condolences to the Messi family via a statement on its social media platform, ‘X’, highlighting Jorge’s significant role in Lionel’s illustrious career. “The President and Board of Directors of Barcelona, along with players and fans, extend their deepest sympathies to the Messi family following the passing of Jorge Messi,” the statement read.

Barcelona also thanked Jorge for the trust he placed in the club during Lionel’s early career when he moved from Argentina to Spain at a young age. “Barcelona is grateful to Jorge Messi for his dedication to our club and for believing in us during the early stages of his son Leo’s football career, as well as throughout his journey to becoming one of the greatest players,” the club added.

Jorge was one of the most influential figures in helping Lionel Messi become one of the greatest footballers of all time. He managed his son’s sporting and professional life from a young age and played a crucial role in Lionel’s transfer from Argentina to Barcelona, where the young forward eventually became a key player for one of the club’s most successful teams.

Jorge passed away in Rosario, where he was receiving treatment. Reports indicate he died around 2 AM local time, and no further medical details were provided to respect the family’s privacy. Previously, Lionel Messi had mentioned that he was going through a tough time due to concerns about his father’s health.

Following Lionel’s emotional reaction after scoring for Argentina, speculation arose about Jorge’s condition. The Messi family later appealed for privacy during this difficult time. After Jorge’s passing, Real Madrid also expressed condolences, honoring him as the father of one of football’s most renowned figures and a former rival of Barcelona.
