Dubai, September 26 (Udaipur Kiran News). Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons openly criticised his team’s performance after their 11-run defeat to Pakistan in the Super Four clash of the Asia Cup 2025, which ended their hopes of reaching the final. Chasing a modest 136-run target, Bangladesh faltered and collapsed under pressure.

Turning point: Dropped catches

Simmons said the match slipped away when Bangladesh fielders dropped three simple catches. Pakistan had slumped to 51/5, but chances went down at crucial moments. Nurul Hasan and Mehidy Hasan dropped a catch of Shaheen Shah Afridi, who then went on to score 19 runs off 13 balls with two sixes. Later, Parvez Hossain Emon dropped Mohammad Nawaz when he was on zero; Nawaz capitalised and added 25 runs off 15 balls.

“When we dropped Shaheen and Nawaz, that’s when the match turned. Before that, we were in complete control. We can’t blame the floodlights in Dubai, these were not difficult chances,” Simmons said.

Batting let the team down

The coach also pointed out Bangladesh’s reckless batting. “Our batsmen went for too many big shots and made poor decisions. We didn’t need to finish the chase in a hurry — we only had to win. Against Sri Lanka on the same pitch, we chased 169 sensibly. The absence of Liton Das and Tanzid really hurt us,” he added.

Bangladesh has long faced criticism for its low strike rate. Simmons admitted that while players are improving gradually, the failure to build partnerships remains the biggest issue. “We have the ability to score quickly and hit sixes, but we must learn to bat longer and form solid partnerships,” he said.

Tactical calls and positives

On sending Mehidy Hasan at number four, Simmons defended the move as a tactical decision to counter Pakistan’s pacers in the powerplay. Mehidy, however, managed just 11 runs.

Despite the early exit, Simmons highlighted positives from the tournament. “The biggest takeaway has been the performance of Saif Hassan. Also, our bowlers were outstanding in every match,” he said.

Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan and Sri Lanka earlier in the campaign but back-to-back losses to India and Pakistan ended their Asia Cup journey.
