Baichung Bhutia Backs Portugal Against Croatia in FIFA World Cup Round of 32

New Delhi, July 2: Former captain of the Indian football team, Baichung Bhutia, has expressed confidence in Portugal’s chances at the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite their average performance in the group stage. He believes that Portugal will elevate their game in the Round of 32 and defeat Croatia.

As part of the expert panel for the G5 FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage, Bhutia stated, “I don’t think Croatia will be able to eliminate them. Portugal is definitely a contender, even though we haven’t seen them perform at their best yet. However, knockout stages are different. They have the potential to showcase a completely different level of performance. I believe we will see a different side of Portugal in the knockout rounds.”

Bhutia emphasized that Portugal’s strength lies in the overall capability of the team, rather than relying solely on their captain. “They have players who can make significant impacts on their own. The big question is whether their creative midfield can consistently create opportunities for Ronaldo,” he added.

The former Indian captain noted, “Portugal’s attacking style will prevail, especially if they can execute quick transitions and attack effectively. However, one weakness is the lack of a true defensive midfielder who can consistently win the ball and shift the game from defense to attack.”

He further explained, “They already possess considerable strength with excellent attacking midfielders, a strong frontline, and two full-backs who enjoy pushing forward. They just need a player in the midfield who can stabilize the game.”

Bhutia also pointed out that the current Croatian team lacks the quality of previous generations. “Croatia has been a strong team that always finds a way to get results. However, I don’t think they have that capability this time. They have brilliant players like Modric, but age is not on their side. They have lost a lot of pace, and their game has slowed down. If Croatia wants to achieve something in this match, Luka Modric needs to have a significant impact. Portugal is not solely dependent on Ronaldo, but Croatia must look to Modric.”

Portugal and Croatia will clash in the Round of 32 on Friday morning in Toronto. This match is also notable for featuring two of modern football’s biggest stars, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric, both of whom are likely playing in their sixth and possibly last World Cup. They will strive to lead their teams to the next round.

Portugal secured their spot in the knockout stage by finishing second in their group after a draw against DR Congo, a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, and a loss to Colombia. Meanwhile, Croatia advanced to the Round of 32 after losing to England but winning against Ghana and Panama.
