Kerala Minister Questions Governors Authority Amid Political Tensions

Keralas Forest Minister, Shibu Baby John, challenges the Governors recommendation to dismiss PSC members, alleging political motives behind ED investigations.

Thiruvananthapuram, October 27 (Daily Kiran) : In Thiruvananthapuram, political tensions are escalating as Shibu Baby John, the Kerala Forest Minister and leader of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), raised concerns on Tuesday regarding the Governor’s recommendation to dismiss members of the Public Service Commission (PSC). He accused the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of targeting former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for political reasons.

John stated that the RSP does not support the Governor’s stance, emphasizing that attempts to undermine constitutional institutions are unacceptable. He questioned the timing of the ED’s actions against Vijayan, noting that the investigation had previously stalled for an extended period.

He expressed doubts about the intentions behind the recent actions of the agency, suggesting they raise questions about its motivations. John also pointed out the lack of clarity regarding the constitutional authority the Governor holds in recommending the mass dismissal of PSC members, a body responsible for recruitment in government services.

The minister firmly rejected any arbitrary actions aimed at weakening such institutions. He reiterated that the RSP stands against the Governor’s position on this matter. Referring to the ED’s investigation linked to Vijayan, John claimed that the agency’s efforts have turned into mere window dressing.

He questioned why central agencies had remained inactive for so long and why the investigation had not progressed adequately during Vijayan’s previous administration. The minister described the ED’s renewed actions as suspicious and accused them of having clear political motives.

Additionally, he made it clear that the United Democratic Front (UDF) government will not blindly follow the path laid out by the central agency. John stated that the public did not elect the UDF government to act according to the directives of the ED. He emphasized that decisions should be based on constitutional principles and public sentiment, rather than being influenced by the political maneuverings of investigative agencies.

His remarks are significant, as they come from within the ruling UDF coalition, highlighting the need for the government to maintain a clear stance on investigations and constitutional issues, rather than offering uncritical support to the actions of central agencies. These issues have also brought to light the complex relationships between constitutional authorities, investigative agencies, and elected governments.
